Johannesburg -

A Rhodes student, who was found dead at a university residence, was killed by a gunshot wound to her upper body.

Talk Radio 702 said police confirmed this on Sunday.

Police officers were called out on Saturday to a shooting at Cullen Bowles, a men’s residence at Rhodes University in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, where they found the bodies of 21-year-old student Amanda Tweyi and 34-year-old Nkosinathi Nqabisa.

Police initially said Tweyi had no visible injuries to her body, while it was suspected her boyfriend Nqabisa committed suicide. Police spokesman Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said a post-mortem was conducted.

“She was actually shot, and this was confirmed by the post-mortem. The wound was not visible at the time when police were called to the scene.”

Trauma counselling had been made available to students following the incident.

Tweyi’s timeline seemed to indicate she was a socially conscious woman and a romantic.

The penultimate post on her Facebook profile on April 19 was a link to a website dealing with autism and ADHD awareness month as “an (honour to) children who struggle every day”.

T

weyi was in her second year of a BSc degree and was from King William’s Town.

Grahamstown police said an inquest docket had been opened.
