Grahamstown - The presence of a man that was found dead at a Rhodes University residence will be investigated, it confirmed on Saturday.

The man's body was found alongside a 21-year-old woman's body in a room at Cullen Bowles male residence, earlier in the day.

The woman was a student from Rosa Parks residence.

“The other person is a man who is not a Rhodes student. His presence at Rhodes is being investigated,” the university said in a statement.

Eastern Cape's police said the man's body was found with a bullet wound to the head. They suspect the man shot himself.

No visible injuries were found on the woman's body.

“A post mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of her death,” Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said.

The university's dean of students Vivian de Klerk posted on her Facebook page that the student's name was Amanda Tweyi.

Rhodes vice-chancellor, Dr Saleem Badat said: “We extend our deepest condolences to her parents, family and friends and colleagues and the residents of Rosa Parks.”

Tweyi was in her second year of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree and was from King Williamstown.

Mjekula said the man was also believed to be from King Williamstown.

The university said it would release updates related to the deaths as they were available by the police.
