Johannesburg - Singer Ringo Madlingozi's tax fraud case was postponed in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday for him to seek legal assistance from the State.

“His request for a lawyer from the Legal Aid Board has not been sorted out yet,” prosecutor Nerisa Reddy told the court.

He allegedly owed money to the SA Revenue Services (SARS) for Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Value Added Tax (VAT).

He allegedly failed to pay his workers' PAYE contributions to SARS but had been deducting it from their salaries since 1999.

Attempts by journalists to obtain the charge sheet were not successful.

The investigating officer refused to hand over the document without giving reasons why.

Madlingozi cut a lonely figure in the public gallery. He had arrived by himself just before 9am.

Dressed in dark blue pants and a matching jacket, he sat and fiddled with his cellphone before he was called into the dock. He is out on warning.

Magistrate Lucas van der Schyff postponed the case to January 9. - Sapa
