Cape Town – A 22-year-old woman who had been reported missing in Johannesburg on 28 April was found dead in a shallow grave on Thursday, just east of the city, EyeWitness News reported.

According to earlier reports, Karabo Mokoena's family said she was murdered, allegedly by her boyfriend. Mokoena's charred remains were discovered in a shallow grave in Lyndhurst, east of the city.

Mokena’s uncle Thapelo was quoted on EWN as saying: “She is my brother’s daughter. We grew up as a very close family, so she has always been my daughter. It’s very traumatic because the body was burned beyond recognition.”

The 22-year-old's picture had been circulated by friends and family on social media.

A plea from Mokoena's friend on Twitter after she went missing.
