Durban - Vigilantism has been blamed for the death of a 31-year-old man who was assaulted and stabbed by residents of Tshelimnyama, near Mariannhill, early on Tuesday after he allegedly snatched a woman’s bag.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said:

“Community members assaulted and stabbed him to death. He died at the scene. Police are investigating a case of murder.”

The man has been identified as Ntokozo “Bruno” Madondo, of Section 21, Dassenhoek, about 5km from the crime scene. The Daily News called on his home, but an agitated relative refused to speak to the reporter.

“Please go away, there is no story here. We are hurting and there is nothing to say,” she said.

No arrests had been made.
