Kimberley - A robbery suspect apparently shot himself after police and residents cornered him in Setlagole, outside Mahikeng, North West police said on Tuesday.

Four men entered a Pakistani man’s shop on Monday night, threatened him and his Malawian security guard with firearms, and assaulted them, Lieutenant Colonel Lesego Metsi said.

“They took groceries, cigarettes, and an undisclosed amount of cash.”

The victims managed to phone friends who called police. The four fled when police and local residents arrived.

“The police pursued the suspects who took different directions and community members also assisted by pursuing other suspects,” said Metsi.

A resident’s dogs caught one of the four. He shot at the dogs and when the police ordered him to drop his gun he shot himself in the head.

The firearm used was stolen from a police officer in Mahikeng last year.

The other three were still at large.
