Johannesburg -

Five men were arrested and another one killed on Friday, in a pension paypoint robbery in Duduza on the East Rand, Gauteng police said.

Security guards were about to deliver cash when they were accosted by six gunmen, Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

They held the guards at gunpoint while assaulting them and demanded that the cash vehicles be opened.

They fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a getaway Toyota Quantum.

One guard gave chase and a shoot-out ensued, Mogale said.

Police were called to the scene.

The men shot at police, who returned fire. One man was killed and one wounded, said Mogale.

The robbers were cornered at Duduza taxi rank, where four were arrested. The wounded man was taken to a local hospital under police guard.

Two unlicensed firearms and the stolen money were recovered.

The men are expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court soon. They face charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and assault. - Sapa
