Johannesburg - A man is under police guard at a hospital after he was shot during an attempted cash-in-transit heist in downtown Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

“A Protea Coin security guard who was guarding his colleague while collecting cash, shot one suspect in the lower body,” said Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

Mbele said three men attempted to rob the security guard after he collected cash from a store at the corner of Bree and Claim streets.

Two of the men managed to get away with their firearms. The third man was transferred to hospital for treatment.

The 28-year-old man would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court as soon as he recovered, Mbele said.
