Durban - An elderly couple were beaten with golf clubs at their home in Mooi River on Saturday night.

Police spokeswoman Captain Gay Ebrahim said that Alan Trowsdale and his wife, Sally Arronsmith, both 72, were watching television when two people entered their farmhouse on Bergview Farm by removing thatch from the roof.

The couple heard the intruders enter. Trowsdale took out his firearm and fired two shots. His firearm then jammed.

“The suspects beat the complainants with golf clubs and demanded cash. They also stole the pistol,” said Ebrahim.

The intruders fled when a neighbour came to assist after hearing the commotion. They were later apprehended.

Ebrahim said one of the intruders, aged 28, sustained a gunshot wound to the right side of the chest.

He alleged that the other suspect had accidentally shot him. That man, aged 40, was also arrested.

Ebrahim said the younger suspect was under police guard at Grey’s Hospital.
