Durban - A Summerveld grandmother was injured during a home invasion early on Friday.

Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson, said two robbers pounced on the 89-year-old woman after she forgot to lock the door to her garden cottage in Paddock Road at about 3.40am.

“She had opened her door to let her dogs out in the early hours of the morning but forgot to lock up. Two robbers entered the cottage through the unlocked door and pounced on the grandmother, forcing a T-shirt into her mouth to stop her screaming. They used a fork to keep the shirt in her mouth, which led to injuries to her mouth,” he said.

“They robbed her of jewellery, her handbag and other valuables before fleeing,” he said. A resident in the main house had been awoken by her screams and went to investigate. The alarm system had not been set. “There was evidence the suspects had tampered with the victim’s car parked nearby.”

Jackson advised people to be vigilant about locking doors.

“We have had many cases reported to us where criminals have simply walked into a home through a door that has been left unlocked.”
