Two armed robbers were killed in a shootout at Durban's Gateway mall on Friday afternoon.

They were apparently part of a gang that attempted to rob an SBV Services cash-in-transit van at the shopping complex, police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said.

It was not immediately known how many robbers were involved and whether any cash was stolen from the van. One of the security guards was struck with a hammer, while the other was shot in the leg.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the two guards were taken to Umhlanga Hospital in a serious condition.

Zwane said a statement would be issued later. – Sapa
