Johannesburg – The shooting that left one taxi passenger dead on Tuesday morning on the N12 highway near Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, was not related to taxi violence, police said.

Captain Mavela Masondo said 15 passengers and driver were travelling from Mozambique to Johannesburg with the intention of buying goods.

Masondo said their taxi, carrying mostly female passengers, was stopped by two vehicles – a BMW and a Toyota Hilux bakkie.

As many as 12 armed suspects ordered the passengers to get out the vehicle before robbing them of their belongings.

During the robbery six people were shot. A woman was declared dead on the scene. Another passenger was airlifted to the hospital and three others were taken to the hospital by the ambulance.

Masondo said that the suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of money. No arrests have been made and the police are on a manhunt for the suspects.
