Durban - Two suspected robbers were wounded during a shoot-out with police in Effingham on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said,

The men, aged 25 and 32, were arrested by the Durban flying squad, said Major Thulani Zwane.

“Members spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle with two occupants,” he said.

“They gave chase and its occupants started shooting at the police. Police retaliated, the suspects collided into a heavy duty truck and alighted from the vehicle, shooting at the police.”

The men were shot and wounded in the incident and were taken to hospital under police guard.

Police seized a pistol with 10 rounds of live ammunition, an AK47 rifle with 30 rounds and the VW Golf the men were driving.

“It was discovered that the vehicle that they crashed was robbed at Durban North where a 31-year-old woman and her family were robbed of their vehicle by suspects wearing balaclavas and blue overalls,” said Zwane.

“The seized firearms will be sent to ballistics to ascertain if they have been used in the commission of any other crime in the country.”

The men will appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court when they are discharged from hospital.
