Rugby player admits killing his girlfriend

Durban - An uMlazi rugby player, Simphiwe Victus Nxele, pleaded guilty to stabbing his girlfriend to death and to the attempted murder of her alleged lover in the Durban High Court on Monday.

Nxele, 23, who played for the Ogwini Rugby Club, was arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, S’thabile Duma, 20, and for the attempted murder of Nicholas Mhlonipheni Ngcongo, 34, on June 22.

According to the indictment, Nxele, armed with a knife, walked to Ngcongo’s home in the Uganda area of uMlazi. He stabbed Ngcongo with the knife until it broke. He went outside and returned with a broken bottle, which he used to continue stabbing him. When Duma arrived, he stabbed her until she died. Nxele will be sentenced on Thursday.
