Johannesburg -

A well-known South African actor and director spent some of the weekend locked behind bars after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

The 45-year-old actor was arrested on Saturday night after he allegedly slapped his girlfriend during an argument.

The alleged assault is said to have taken place in Honeydew, northwest of Joburg.

The alleged attack, which came in the wake of an outcry over the spate of violence perpetrated against women by their spouses or intimate partners, was confirmed by the police.

“The complainant went to the police station (to report a case of assault). She said he slapped her, and the suspect was arrested at his house,” said police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale on Sunday.

She added that the suspect faced charges of domestic violence and assault.

The actor was detained at the Roodepoort police station.

Sources at the police station said he was still being held in a holding cell at 7pm on Sunday night.

“He is obviously worried, but he looked calm and relaxed,” said a source at the station.

The actor was due to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of domestic violence and assault.
