North West - South Africa belongs to the rich, not all who live in it, said Cosatu in the North West on Monday.

“Cosatu has observed that more often when a white farm owner is killed, for whatever reason, this makes headline news in every newspaper and radio station, and the whole criminal justice system stands up to make sure that the killer is brought to book,” provincial secretary Solly Phetoe said.

“But when a black farm worker is killed by a white farm owner nobody cares, including the judicial system of our country.”

Phetoe said there were a number of cases which were thrown out of court when a victim was black Ä “but they are brought to a conclusion when the victim is white”.

Bail amounts followed the same trend, he said.

In the murder case of Eugene Terre'Blanche, the perpetrator was granted bail of R5000.

“In the same year, Oupa Ranta was killed by a group of whites in Zeerust and they were all given a bail of R1000. To date nobody knows where the case is,” he said.

Recently a farmer allegedly killed a farm worker in the area of Vryburg by electrocuting him. The court granted him bail of R2000, Phetoe said.

“Where is justice for those who do not have money?”

There was a need for government to ensure that the Constitution served all citizens, Phetoe said. - Sapa
