Durban -
South Africa is ready to host the Brics summit in Durban, national police commissioner Riah Phiyega said on Saturday.
Phiyega said a collaborative integrative plan representing various security forces in the country, with over 3000 law enforcement agencies, was in place.
“We are going to have a safe and secure event,” she told reporters in Durban.
Phiyega said South Africa had a reputation as world leaders of successfully hosting events of this magnitude.
“Our security forces together with stakeholders which include all department representatives have been recognised in proficiency in ensuring that such an event takes place in a safe and peaceful environment,” she said.
Phiyega called on law enforcement officers to serve with dignity, pride and restraint.
The fifth Brics summit will be hosted at the iNkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban from 26 to 27 March.
Brics is an economic bloc representing five of the world's leading emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. - Sapa
