Johannesburg - A South African is facing years in a Thai prison after she was arrested for allegedly smuggling cocaine worth about R8 million.

According to several Thai-based news sites, 34-year-old Monica Meere was arrested on Thursday at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

The Pattaya Daily News reported that customs had discovered 7kg of cocaine worth 24.5 million baht inside three unopened boxes of chocolate as well as two separate packages inside her luggage.

Efforts to reach her family on Sunday were unsuccessful, but a woman close to Meere, who declined to be named, said: “This has been a shock to the whole family.”

It appears as though this is not the first time Meere had visited the south-east Asian country this year, judging by her Facebook profile.

On February 16, she posted a picture of a boarding pass with her name printed on it.

On February 17, Meere wrote on her Facebook wall: “Don’t juge (sic) me if ya don’t know me!! No one but the lord may do so!”
