Johannesburg - The trustee of a prominent charity organisation, as well as his son, have been killed.

Haroon Saleh, 59, was shot and killed by two men during a robbery at their Azaadville home, west of Joburg, in the early hours of Thursday.

He was confirmed dead at the scene. His son Yusuf, 29, sustained injuries during the shooting and was airlifted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, where he later died.

Two relatives at the house at the time of the shooting were not harmed.

Police spokeswoman Constable Rebecca Phithi said two gunmen gained access through a window at about 3am while the family were asleep.

They went straight into Haroon’s room, demanding that he hand over his money and possessions. His son heard the commotion from his room, and when he tried to intervene, he was shot. Phithi said the family had not yet established if anything was taken from the house.

Murder, attempted murder and house robbery charges are being probed, with no arrests as yet.

Haroon Saleh was a member and volunteer at Crescent of Hope, an NGO which has done charitable work both locally and abroad. Among others, they provide food and water and build homes in stricken areas. They also provide a feeding scheme and educational resources to schools.

Haroon was also a crime activist and a member of the Azaadville neighbourhood watch.

The organisation and the community policing forum conveyed their condolences to the family.
