Cape Town – The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Monday called on students of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to “isolate and marginalise” those responsible for acts of violence and damage to university property.

In a statement, Sanco condemned the torching of the main auditorium at UJ in the early hours of Monday morning.

“The senseless destruction of university property is outrageous. Barbaric acts of violence targeted at education infrastructure investments are a serious drawback,” said Sanco national spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu in a statement.

“It is not sustainable for universities to spend more on security than academic programmes and research.”

Mahlangu said the arrest of the arsonists should be prioritised.

UJ said cost of the damage caused by the arsonists, who first broke into the venue at Kingsway campus and destroyed computer laboratories, was estimated to be around R100 million.
