Johannesburg - An SANDF general is facing charges of taking backhanders for tenders. Brigadier General Leon Eggers, the General Officer Commanding the South African Army’s Signal Formation, was arrested on Thursday morning and appeared in the Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria, over fraud and corruption allegations.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Eggers was in charge of all the telecommunication systems of the SANDF.

“Several contracts or tenders were awarded to various service providers for the installation or maintenance of telecommunication infrastructure,” said NPA spokeswoman Kholiswa Mdhluli.

“General Eggers, to a large extent, was involved in the process/es of awarding these contracts.

“He, over a period, received corrupt payments from some of these service providers to the combined value of approximately R500 000. These include, but are not limited to, cash payments, trips overseas, etc,” said Mdhluli.

“The service providers are not yet charged, but will in all probability be charged in future, but in a separate matter.”
