Johannesburg - The racial abuse of and assault on an employee at the World of Golf in Johannesburg was “unacceptable”, the theme park's owner said on Tuesday.

“On Saturday evening, an unacceptable altercation occurred... (when) a day visitor of the facility was involved in a fight with a member of staff, Nathan Maluleke,” owner Darryl Edges said in a statement.

Maluleke was severely beaten in the altercation, which “regrettably escalated into a full-on fight”.

Police were called to the scene and arrested the assailant, Edges said.

Police were not immediately available to verify the crime.

“Unfortunately our internal security was unable to deal with the incident, which quickly escalated out of control.”

Edges said an internal investigation had been launched, in addition to the police investigation.

“Nathan is a long-serving golf professional with the Gary Player Golf Experience and a valued member of our team.”

He said the More Golf group and the World of Golf did not tolerate racism.

“Our immediate concern is the speedy recovery of Nathan and we are assured that the legal process will take its course.”

Edges said the company would offer Maluleke support and advice in taking legal steps against his attacker. - Sapa
