The affordable education loan option
Pretoria - Police administrative staff marched in Pretoria on Thursday to press for a salary upgrade, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said.
While Popcru spokeswoman Theto Mahlakoana said more than 10 000 members took part, Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale estimated that not more than 2000 people were there.
They were demanding an upgrade of the salary levels of all administrative staff in line with those of other public service departments.
Mahlakoana said the police had consistently failed to put into effect a 2011 agreement to this effect.
Makgale said it was disappointing that Popcru had chosen the strike route instead of continuing with talks and correctly informing its members about progress made.
“Contrary to the statement made by Popcru, management has implemented the relevant agreement. Steps are planned to address the remaining factors,” he said.
A man participating in the march died when he was knocked down by a car.
Makgale said the man, who was believed to be from Potchefstroom in North West, was wandering away from the procession when he was hit.
