The trial of six youths accused of setting two girls alight in an alleged satanic ritual was postponed by the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The court heard that the defence and prosecution were still waiting for the director of public prosecutions to decide on a possible plea bargain for two of the accused, Lester Moody, 18, and Jeremy King, 18.

The trial was postponed until March 29.

In October, Kirsty Theologo, 18, was doused with petrol and set alight on a koppie behind the Linmeyer swimming pool in Julius Street, Johannesburg.

She died a week later in the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Her 14-year-old friend was also burnt, but survived. She underwent skin grafts and other treatment to limit the physical damage caused by the fire.

Lindon Wagner, 21, Robin Harwood, 18, Harvey Isha, 23, Moody and King remain in custody. They were denied bail in November. The sixth accused, a 15-year-old girl, was previously released into the custody of her parents.

Theologo's mother Sylvia attended the proceedings for the first time on Tuesday.

“My daughter needs my support. Now I'm stronger and I want to be here for her.”

She also saw the five accused for the first time since the murder. “I hate them. I know I shouldn't, but I do. They were good boys,” she said. – Sapa
