Johannesburg - The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein will hear an appeal by Sheryl Cwele and Nigerian Frank Nabolisa on Thursday against their convictions and sentences.

Cwele, the former wife of State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele, and Nabolisa were convicted of drug dealing by the Pietermaritzburg High Court and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Cwele, 50, was appealing against her conviction only, while Nabolisa was appealing both his conviction and sentence.

Cwele and Nabolisa were found guilty in May 2011 of recruiting two women to transport drugs.

Both pleaded not guilty to conspiring to deal in drugs, to procuring a woman (Charmaine Moss) to collect drugs in Turkey, and to procuring another woman (Tessa Beetge) to smuggle cocaine from South America.

While she may have arranged for the two women to travel overseas, she did not know it was for a nefarious purpose, she submitted in papers.

The SCA was also asked to consider whether the only inference to be drawn from the proven facts was that Cwele and Nabolisa had jointly recruited drug mules.

Nabolisa was in custody, and Cwele out on R100 000 bail, pending their appeals. - Sapa
