Johannesburg - A Kagiso man whose son was stabbed by a fellow pupil in school says he is scared that one day the perpetrator will kill someone if no action is taken against him.

Charles*, whose son Bongani* was stabbed with a pair of scissors on the left side of his body during break at Mandisa High School in Krugersdorp on Wednesday, said he was going to lay a charge against the boy.

This, he said, was to ensure police knew about the matter in case the boy went too far and killed someone.

Bongani, 15, was admitted to Leratong Hospital the same day and was discharged on Thursday afternoon. Charles said he did not want his son to be harassed when he went back to school.

“If he carries on like this, he will kill someone at the school so it should be known what kind of a person he is,” the 51-year-old man said on Thursday.

Speaking from his hospital bed on Thursday, Bongani said since he started school this year, he noticed that his attacker always carried a pair of scissors and he would approach other pupils and simulate stabbing them in the chest. Bongani is in Grade 9.

Bongani said the boy would walk around the school with the scissors, brandishing it like a knife. He said the boy would jab other children with it on the chest in a playful way but no one was amused because it came to a point where other pupils avoided him.

“Whenever he came to me like that with the scissors I would push him away. I did not like the way he played with the scissors because I was scared he would end up hurting someone.”

Bongani did not realise that one day he would fall victim to the boy’s pranks.

He said he was minding his own business on Tuesday when the boy came up to him and kept jabbing him with the scissors.

He said when he brushed the boy away, he scraped him with the scissors on the shoulder. Bongani said the boy apologised when he told him that he had hurt him.

He said he did not report the matter because he did not think it was a big deal.

However, when it became sore, he told his classmates what had happened. The following day, on Wednesday, the boy approached him again. Bongani said the boy started jabbing at his chest with the scissors again.

“I pushed him away but he came back and stabbed me. I pushed him and he pushed me back. I pushed him again and suddenly felt like I was losing power. I also felt my shirt wet. I lifted my jersey and school shirt to find out that I was bleeding. I was not even aware I had been stabbed.”

Bongani ran to the staffroom where one of the teachers rushed him to the nearby clinic.

His father was called and he met them at the clinic.

From there he bundled Bongani into his car and took him to Leratong Hospital.

Spokesman for the Gauteng Department of Education Oupa Bodibe confirmed the incident and said preliminary investigations indicated there had not been a fight between the two pupils, as they were friends.

Bodibe also said the principal stated the school had not received complaints from classmates or teachers about the behaviour of the perpetrator in the past or anything to indicate he was a threat to other pupils.

“The alleged perpetrator was immediately suspended and the school is taking disciplinary action against him.

“The department strongly condemns the alleged conduct of the pupils, as we believe that effective teaching and learning can never take place in an environment marred by violence and ill-discipline,” he said.
