Cape Town - A second man has been arrested in connection with the murder of little Hope van der Merwe, 6, who was shot in New Woodlands, Mitchells Plain, on Monday.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said a man aged 27 had been arrested in Manenberg.
He is due to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court today with a 23-year-old man who was arrested on Monday on the same charges.
Hope was hit in the back of the head by a stray bullet during what appeared to have been a gang-related fight in Alexis Preller Street.
Her friend Jaden Dass, 5, was grazed by a bullet.
An 18-year-old man was also hit but is recovering. Hope “graduated” from Grade R at West End Primary School last month.
Meanwhile Hope’s family are appealing for donations to help pay for her funeral.
Dashley van der Merwe, 30, Hope’s aunt and adoptive mother, said only one family member had a job.
“My mom and I are not working. My dad, Daniel, works at a truck repair place but he makes little money. Now we don’t know how were are going to be able to bury Hope on Saturday.” Van der Merwe said the family did not have a funeral policy. “It is a lot of money and we asking for a little help.” She said the funeral arrangements were in limbo.
