Cape Town -
A Cape Town gangster believed to have been a “secret” witness in the city’s most sensational unsolved murder – the drive-by assassination of crime boss Cyril Beeka in March 2011 – has been shot dead in Belhar.
Leon Jacobs, known as Lyons, was apparently personally implicated in Beeka’s murder, and was reportedly seeking a plea bargain in April last year.
At the time, sources close to the investigation said Lyons wanted guaranteed indemnity from prosecution, or a reduced sentence, for fingering the murder masterminds of Beeka’s murder.
Captain FC van Wyk confirmed on Wednesday night that the 29-year-old was standing with a group of friends on Bloemendal Street in Belhar at about 6.20pm when two unidentified men approached and randomly opened fire.
An 18-year-old woman had been shot in the foot and a 40-year-old sustained a minor head wound.
