Pretoria - Living in a security complex does not make a person immune to crime, Oscar Pistorius' lawyer Barry Roux said at his bail application in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

“Unfortunately, it is not South Africa's best kept secret: crime is not limited to unsecure areas,” he said.

Roux was presenting argument on why Pistorius should be granted bail after he was accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home in the Silver Woods country estate.

Pistorius said he thought a burglar was in the toilet when he shot through the door, killing her.

Living in a security complex did not tilt the scales in the State's favour, continued Roux

It was a “neutral” factor, he said. - Sapa
