Johannesburg - A security guard employed by a Sanral subcontractor was shot dead at a power line in Alberton on Friday morning, Gauteng police said.
He was on patrol at 4.30am when he saw two men standing next to a power line in Comara Road, approached them and asked them what they were doing, said Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale.
“One suspect pulled out a firearm and fired several shots, fatally wounding the guard,” she said. The men fled.
Sanral spokesman Vusi Mona confirmed the shooting.
“Sanral is currently talking to the police and the security contractor to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said in a statement.
Mona said more details would be provided once the guard's family had been informed. - Sapa
