Seven foreign nationals were arrested when they were found in possession of contraband cigarettes in Wolmaransstad, North West police said on Friday.
The Hawks were on patrol along the South Africa-Botswana border on Thursday when they noticed a truck being escorted by a black Mercedez Benz, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.
“The truck was coming from Botswana and Hawks followed (it) until the truck got to Wolmaransstand. On arrival there, boxes were offloaded from the truck to a Quantum (minibus) and a Nissan truck.”
Four Botswana nationals and three Pakistanis were arrested. Three other Pakistanis escaped in the Mercedes.
A total of 209 boxes of contraband cigarettes with an estimated street value of R3.5 million were confiscated. The two trucks and the minibus were impounded.
The seven would appear in the Wolmaransstad Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
