Cape Town - A DJ facing multiple sex charges has died days after predicting his own death.

Zamile Mkontwana, 34, died on Tuesday afternoon while at a friend’s house in Makhaza, Khayelitsha.

He was released on R500 bail in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court last Thursday following a sexual assault charge.

The former Radio Zibonele assistant programmes manager had allegedly exposed himself and demanded oral sex from a junior colleague who was live on air.

Mkontwana had battled renal failure since 2011, a condition that required him to be on daily dialysis.

Before his death he claimed he was not getting the required treatment during his six weeks in Pollsmoor Prison and was admitted to Groote Schuur Hospital twice.

His brother Champion Mkontwana says: “In the end he could not do anything for himself anymore.

“He had lost function of his arms and legs, couldn’t walk. We even ended up having to carry him to the toilet.

“But we had expected this. On Saturday he told us he could sense the end was coming soon.

“He even asked us to go to Radio Zibonele and enquire about his policies and what would happen in the event of his passing.”

Mkontwana’s death comes just three days before he was meant to make another appearance in court on charges dating back to 2011.

In these he was accused of raping two young boys and showing them pornography at his home.

The mothers of the two young boys have both extended their condolences to the Mkontwana family over his death and say they had already forgiven him.

“I would have never wished this on him even after all the pain he put us in,” said one mother.

“My son is still dealing with what happened, still in counselling but I’m helping him get through it all.

“I’m both shocked and heartsore, and will keep his family in my prayers.”
