Durban - A northern KZN teacher has denied having sex with schoolgirls after videos of him engaged in sex circulated on social networks.

His lawyer, Bruce Macgregor, confirmed on Wednesday that it was the teacher at the school in Nquthu who was in the videos, but said the women having sex with him were adults in their late twenties and early thirties.

“There are three videos of three adult women. Two are his girlfriends and one is his common-law wife.

“They have all been identified, and are all in their late twenties and early thirties,” said Macgregor.

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane visited the school and went to the Nquthu police station to open a criminal charge against the teacher. He said at least six girls between the ages of 15 and 16 had come forward with allegations against the teacher.

Macgregor said after he had conducted his own investigation he alerted police to the findings, which were contrary to the allegations.

“And now they have indicated that he does not have to hand himself in because they are not going to arrest him.

“The police don’t require him to hand himself over because they have realised that there is more to the story.”

He said he had checked with the police and no schoolgirl had made a statement.

However, earlier this week police spokesman Thulani Zwane said the teacher was “still at large” and he would be charged with rape and sexual assault.

Zwane said on Monday that officers had been unable to find him and appealed for information that could lead to his arrest.

On Wednesday Zwane could not respond to questions about Macgregor’s statement.

“We are not going to make further comments about this because it is a sensitive matter since it had been reported that one of the women nearly committed suicide. The matter is still under investigation,” he said.

After the videos had been discovered, a group of angry pupils went to the teacher’s cottage at the school, which was where the pupils alleged he had sex with pupils, and burnt some of his property.

Macgregor has accused Dlungwane of failing to conduct a proper investigation into the matter.

“We are waiting to see if such statements (from schoolgirls) come forward. The videos relate to other people, and not schoolgirls,” he said.

Soon after the videos appeared, Dlungwane visited the school to address the pupils and teachers.

Macgregor said he had a problem with Dlungwane making statements about the incidents “without a proper investigation”.

“We reserve our right to take action against the MEC because what he said was untrue.”

He said the teacher was “very upset about what has happened because he is innocent”.

Dlungwane’s and education spokesmen’s telephones rang unanswered.

A member of the student council said the videos were contained in a memory card that the teacher was said to have dropped in the street.

It was found by one of the pupils.
