Durban - The two women charged with the murder of Phoenix schoolboy Shahiel Sewpujun, 9, have been notified by the State that they will be served with indictments in a month’s time.

Rajwanthie Haripersadh, 54, and her daughter, Kavitha Naicker, 31, made a brief appearance at a packed Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Bathokozile Zikalala told the court the photo albums and DNA results to be supplied by the State were not yet ready.

She asked for the matter to be adjourned to April 14, when the State would serve the women with indictments, meaning the matter is being escalated to the Durban High Court.

Shahiel was reported missing by his mother, Ishara Dewnarain, on February 5.

The mother and son were living in the same home as Naicker (her cousin) and Haripersadh (her aunt).

After a search by residents, police and private security companies, Shahiel’s body was found, covered in plastic, dumped in a stormwater drain in Clayfield, Phoenix, on February 8. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

Meanwhile, protesters gathered outside the court, holding placards indicating their displeasure. Some people in the public gallery also hurled abuse at the pair as they were led away from the dock.
