Durban - A gardener working for Shamin “Chippy” Shaik appeared in court on Wednesday for allegedly breaking into the mining boss’s home and stealing almost half a million rand in cash and valuables.
Themba Mkhwanazi, 39, who has not yet pleaded to the allegation, was remanded to the Durban North police station cells while investigations continue.
Mkhwanazi allegedly broke into Shaik’s Glenashley home in December and stole R300 000 in cash, US$8 000 (R85 000) as well as four cut diamonds valued at R80 000 and 20 tourmaline gem stones worth R30 000.
The case was adjourned to March 5 when Mkhwanazi is expected to apply for bail.
Shaik, who has appealed for anyone who has been offered the diamonds and gemstones to get in touch with their nearest police station, told the Daily News earlier this month that he had returned from Australia, where he was now based, to find his safe missing.
It had been bolted to the wall in one of the bedrooms.
