Johannesburg - A man ambushed and shot while travelling to Mthatha managed to drive himself to hospital after the attack, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

“The man was about a kilometre from town when he was shot at and injured by unknown assailants,” Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The 41-year-old man, travelling from Langeni Forest to Mthatha around 9pm on Saturday, had slowed down at a junction when shots were fired and stones thrown at him. He was injured in his upper body, yet managed to drive to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.

Fatyela said the man could not see how many people had attacked him because it was dark. The motive was not yet known and no arrests had been made. A case of attempted murder was being investigated. Police found stones and a bullet in the victim's bakkie.

In a separate incident two men were arrested for attempting to hijack a Toyota Avanza around 10pm on Saturday night in Madeira Street, Mthatha.

Fatyela said police patrolling the area were able to prevent the men, aged 32 and 34, from taking the car. - Sapa
