Rustenburg – Ten people were arrested after at least six shops were looted in Itsoseng near Lichtenburg following violent protest, North West police said on Friday. Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said shops were looted at Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3 since violent protest flared up in Itsoseng on Wednesday.

"The violence and burglary businesses came after protest actions by members of the community who are allegedly complaining about shortage of water," he said. "At this stage, ten suspects aged between 18 and 39 have been arrested between Wednesday and today (Friday) for business burglary and possession of suspected stolen goods..."

He requested the community to respect the rule of law and avoid destruction of properties and any form of criminality as that cannot be tolerated. "It is imperative that existing laws including the Regulation of Gatherings Act, 1993 (Act No. 205 of 1993) are complied with."
