Durban - A Chatsworth mother who was shot in the chest allegedly by her landlord says throughout the incident she prayed her 5-month-old baby had not been harmed.
Simone Subrayen said her family had left their rented Moorcross, Crossmoor, home and moved in temporarily with her mother.
They were undergoing trauma counselling.
Landlord Vasa Govender appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with an allegation of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The matter was adjourned to later this week for his formal bail application. Govender, 55, was remanded in custody.
He allegedly shot at his tenants at their Moorcross home, wounding Neville Jodash Moodley, 24, and his girlfriend, Subrayen, 20, last Wednesday evening.
His mother, Annamma Govender, 88, who lived next door, was killed when she allegedly tried to intervene.
Subrayen has been discharged from hospital. She described surviving the shooting - in which a bullet hit her chest and exited through her arm - as a “miracle”.
“The doctors said that I was lucky to come away without any serious injuries considering I was shot in the chest,” said Subrayen.
She said she had flashbacks of the incident.
“During the entire incident, I just kept thinking about my baby, hoping she had not been harmed.”
Subrayen said the incident had caused her family major inconvenience.
“Our belongings are still in Moorcross. The kids and I are at my mom’s place while Neville is at his parents’ home.
“He also won’t be able to work for a while because of his injured hand,” she said.
Members of the Govender family have declined to comment.
