Boksburg - A schoolboy, after being shot in the leg, captured a hijacker who had wounded his father outside their Boksburg home on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

Just after 6am, two men in a silver Volkswagen Polo stopped behind the father's silver grey Nissan Qashqai in Doone Avenue, Boksburg, on the East Rand.

“One of the suspects on the passenger side, jumped out and shot the complainant (father) in the chest,” Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said in a statement.

“The complainant's son jumped out of the vehicle and went after the shooter to confront him.”

The would-be hijacker shot the boy in the right thigh, but despite this he managed to keep the shooter in the park across from their home, Mogale said.

Neighbours who had heard the gunshots came running out to help.

“An Ekurhuleni metro police officer arrived on the scene and assisted in arresting the two suspects.”

One of the two hijackers sustained slight injuries and was hospitalised. The father and son were also taken to hospital.

Mogale could not confirm a report that they were on their way to school and did not know the son's age, but confirmed he was a schoolboy. Police recovered a Norinco pistol during the arrest.

“The suspects have already been arrested before. One of the suspects is out on parole for an armed robbery, while the other suspect is linked to a theft case,” Mogale said.

The men would appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court soon.
