Mafikeng - Three children suffocated after they were left inside their parents' car for about 20 minutes in Mahikeng on Wednesday, North West police said.

The children, aged four, six and 10, were left inside the car after their parents went to a chemist to collect medication for the youngest child, Colonel Emelda Setlhako said.

Earlier the four-year-old was taken to a doctor.

“The mother went back to the car after buying juice for the three children and found them inside, but they were very weak,” she said.

The children were rushed to Victoria Hospital and certified dead on arrival.

“The police are currently investigating a case of inquest and no foul play is suspected.

“The police would like to send a stern warning to all parents to ensure that they do not leave children in a closed cars without supervision,” Setlhako said.
