Durban - Two sisters were arrested for allegedly committing insurance fraud in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.
The women, aged 47 and 35, were arrested on Monday, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.
They allegedly took out funeral cover using an identity document stolen from one Mandisa Mkhwebula.
“After nine months of paying the death cover premiums, they declared her 1/8Mkhwebula 3/8 as deceased and they prepared the necessary documents with home affairs, the funeral parlour and a medical doctor to enable them to claim from the insurance,” said Mdunge.
They claimed she had died in August 2010.
Officers from the Durban commercial crimes unit arrested one of the women while she was trying to process the fraudulent claim. She claimed she was not aware of the fraud and that her sister gave her the documents. The other sister was arrested later on Monday.
They were expected to appear in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court soon. Investigations were continuing to determine who else was involved. - Sapa
