Durban - A man accused of killing his wife, sister-in-law and a friend outside his home has appeared in the Nsimbini Magistrate’s Court.

The 45-year-old, from Folweni A section near Isipingo, was not asked to plead when he appeared on Monday on three counts of murder and a charge of attempted murder and assault, relating to the same incident.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said those who died were Ntombizonke “Mathuli” Yolanda Hlatshwayo, 38, her sister, Phumzile Gebashe, 40, and her 30-year-old friend, Tu Ndlovu.

Gebashe’s daughter, Hlengiwe Gebashe, 19, said the family had received a call telling them the bad news at about 9.30pm on Friday.

They rushed to the house, about 10 minutes away, and found the bodies in the road near the man’s house.

“It is very sad to lose them in this manner.

“Police were on the scene collecting evidence.”

Hlengiwe said her mother had been shot in the side.

“My aunt had been shot on the leg, thigh and hand while trying to protect her forehead. Her chest was full of bullet wounds.”

The matter was adjourned to next week for a formal bail application.
