Johannesburg - Six police officers, from three different provinces, have been arrested for various crimes, the Hawks said on Sunday.

A 30-year-old constable was arrested in Mthatha, Eastern Cape on Friday in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old woman on New Year's eve, spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

The officer was allegedly having an affair with the woman's mother and the she told her father about the affair.

“The father confronted the wife who in turn informed the constable and an assassin was hired to eliminate the deceased,” Mulaudzi said.

The woman was shot and killed in the afternoon of December 31.

“On Friday, the organised crime unit team... arrested the alleged hitman who spilled the beans on the alleged involvement of the constable.”

The alleged assassin was found in possession of a unlicensed firearm and had been linked to another murder in Ngqeleni.

The constable is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Monday.

In Durban, KwaZulu-Natal a 32-year-old constable was arrested on Friday for allegedly trying to extort money from a suspect to squash a 2008 murder case.

The officer allegedly asked for R5000 from the person, Mulaudzi said.

“A R3000 payment was made in early January this year.

“Oblivious of his underhand tactics, the constable was arrested on Friday after collecting the R2000 balance,” he said.

The constable is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday.

In Port Elizabeth, a 45-year-old warrant officer was arrested on Friday after causing an accident with a state vehicle while allegedly being under the influence of alcohol.

The officer was on duty at the time and tried to flee the scene.

“(He) was restrained by traffic officials until his arrest by police,” Mulaudzi said.

The warrant officer is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Monday.

In the North West, three constables from Biesiesvlei were arrested on Friday for allegedly trying to solicit a R200 bride from a motorist transporting oranges.

“The driver informed the police and were pointed out by the victim,” Mulaudzi said.

The three were expected to appear in the Lichtenburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
