Durban - Six men were arrested in connection with hijackings and killings during a police operation in Umlazi, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

“The first four suspects aged between 19 and 35 were arrested in Umlazi and they were linked to hijackings in Umbilo, Montclair, Wentworth and Brighton Beach area,” said Captain Thulani Zwane.

“While members were busy with their investigation, a cellphone rang from one of the suspected hijackers, informing him that his friend had killed a tuck shop owner at G section in Umlazi. The caller was not aware that his friend had been arrested.”

Zwane said the alleged hijacker was escorted by police to meet the caller at G section.

“Two suspects tried to flee after seeing the police. They were caught and police found one of them in possession of a 9mm pistol that was suspected to have been used in the killing of a 22-year-old tuck shop owner in G section a few minutes earlier,” said Zwane.

He said goods stolen during the robbery of the tuck shop owner were recovered.

Zwane said the four were arrested for two separate hijackings.

“The alleged hijackers shot and killed a 57-year-old man at Warner Beach in Amanzimtoti during a hijacking in November, and they allegedly hijacked a woman in Wentworth early this month,” said Zwane.

All the arrested suspects would appear in various courts around Durban soon.
