Rustenburg - Six people were in police custody in Mogwase near Marikana in the North West for allegedly kidnapping a Bangladeshi shopkeeper and holding him captive for seven days while demanding a half a million rand ransom from his family, North West police said on Friday.

Police spokesman Paul Ramaloko said the six, which include four Bangladeshi men and two South Africans, were arrested shortly after the shopkeeper managed to escape and alert authorities.

“The six allegedly kept the victim for seven days at a house in Wonderkop and demanded ransom of R500,000 for his release.

“On Thursday the victim managed to run-away from his kidnappers and he called for help from the community who then summoned the police to the scene,” said Ramaloko.

“Rustenburg Tactical Response Team (TRT) that was in the area for their routine duties responded to the call. The victim was found with his hands still tied with cable-ties, surrounded by few community members and relatives of the victim,” said Ramaloko.

Police said the four Bangladeshi suspects were taken to hospital under police guard after an angry mob assaulted them.

The two South African suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested on the same day.

All six are expected to appear in the Mankwe Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The victim was robbed and kidnapped at his supermarket in Welgeval in Mogwase on New Year's Eve.
