Umbumbululu, KZN - Six people are expected to appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of public violence allegedly committed during taxi fare protests in Folweni.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the protesters blocked roads and burnt tyres.

Residents said they were fearful after 15-year-old Xolani Buthelezi was shot dead during a protest on Monday.

“There was a mob of about 1 500 that protested. Someone fired shots at the police and one policeman retaliated and fired back,”

Mdunge said. “We cannot conclude who shot him at this stage, but a post-mortem and ballistics test will determine that.”

He said taxi operators de-cided yesterday against raising the fares by R3.
