Six in dock after R1,2m bank robbery

Johannesburg - Six people appeared in the Mhala Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga in connection with a R1,2 million bank robbery, the Hawks said on Thursday.

Nhlanhla Benedict Nkuna, 30, Sibusiso Makhubela, 24, Sibusiso Nhleko, 29, Nkosinathi Given Mashabane, 25, Mxolisi Lubisi, 29 and Bonginkosi Cyprian Mabuza ,27 are accused of robbing an Absa bank in Mhala on March 19.

They were arrested on Sunday in Pienaar and Kanyamazane after police received a tip-off, said Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

“The bank employee and a technician, who are still at large, allegedly organised the robbery and gave the suspects the keys to unlock the ATM doors. A total of R1,2 million was stolen. More arrests are imminent.”

A BMW and a VW Polo alleged to have been used during the robbery were recovered. A Toyota Corolla which was allegedly bought with the stolen money was also seized, he said.

The alleged robbers are expected back in court on April 20 for bail application.
