Johannesburg - Six men awaiting trial for various crimes escaped from the Malipsdrift police cells on Sunday, Limpopo police said.
The men were being served their meals when they overpowered a police officer, said Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba.
They had disarmed the officer of his service pistol.
The escapees were awaiting trial for offences ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, assault with intend to do grievous bodily harm and stock theft, said Ramatseba.
An intensive search has been launched.
A task team was investigating the circumstances which led to the escape of the six men. - Sapa
