Rustenburg – Two suspected robbers were wounded during a shoot-out with the police near Brits, North West police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the police in Brits, together with Phokeng K9 Unit, nabbed six suspects, aged between 28 and 43, for business robbery, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen goods on Tuesday.

“The apprehension of the suspects came after they allegedly robbed a clothing store in Rustenburg,” he said.

“According to information, Phokeng K9 Unit members were on routine patrol when they spotted a Toyota Quantum that the suspects were driving with. A chase ensued and police back-up was mobilised in Brits.

“It was during a chase that the suspects stopped their vehicle near the Damonsville and Letlhabile intersection, then got out of the vehicle and ran into bushes while shooting at the police who returned fire. It is alleged that two suspects were wounded in the process, but all six of them were arrested. The wounded suspects were admitted at a hospital where they are under police guard.”

He said the police confiscated three firearms and recovered items robbed from the store.

“Preliminary investigation has linked the suspects to another business robbery case that was reported in Letlhabile last week. The suspects are expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court soon,” he said.
