Pietermaritzburg - A long week of prayer for the safe return of their kidnapped child ended on Wednesday when the parents of Fanele Asemahle Dlamini were reunited with their 7-month-old baby girl.

Fanele was snatched at the Department of Home Affairs in Pietermaritzburg last week. Her mother, Phumzile, and her sister, Nokwanda Dlamini, had gone to the offices to apply for the baby’s birth certificate.

Nokwanda had fed the baby a bottle and was waiting for her sister to return from doing paperwork when the baby’s dummy fell to the floor.

A woman, who had been waiting with the sisters, asked to hold the baby while Dlamini picked up the dummy. As she bent down, the woman disappeared with the child.

Phumzile said on Wednesday she was happy that her baby had been found and was safe. She did not have details about how her child had been found.

She said she had been contacted by a social worker in Impendle to come to identify the baby.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that the baby had been found.

He added that a 20-year-old suspect had been arrested and charged with kidnapping.

In April, another baby, Olwethu Madlala, was kidnapped at the same building.
